What is the risk? Staffordshire has several main rivers and waterways. After long or heavy periods of rain, these can burst their banks, causing 'fluvial flooding' . Flooding can also happen from blocked drains or burst water mains.

Floodwater can cause serious damage to your home and business and can cut off roads and essential services.

What you can do BEFORE a flood:

• Check your risk: Use the free 'Check for flooding' service on the GOV.UK website. This will tell you if your home or business is in an area at risk from rivers or surface water.
• Sign up for alerts: Sign up for the free 'Flood Warning' service. You will get an automated call, email, or text if flooding is expected in your area.
• Make a flood plan: Download a 'Personal flood plan' from the GOV.UK website. Think about where you would move valuable or sentimental items before flooding happens. Know how to turn off your gas, electricity, and water supplies.

What you can do DURING a flood:

• If you get a flood warning, act quickly.
• Move family, pets, and your 'grab bag' upstairs or to a safe place.
• If it is safe to do so, turn off your gas, water, and electricity.
• Never walk or drive through floodwater. Just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move a car. The water can also hide dangers like open manhole covers.
• Listen to local radio or follow your local council on social media for updates.

What you can do AFTER a flood:

• Call your insurance company as soon as you can.
• Take photos and videos of the damage before you start cleaning up.
• Floodwater can contain sewage. Always wear waterproof gloves and boots when cleaning.
• Your local council will share information on where to get help and how to dispose of damaged items.
