Know your risks

What is the risk? A technical failure, severe weather, or damage to a pipe could cause a large-scale loss of gas supply . This would affect your heating, hot water, and cooking. This is a very serious risk, especially in winter.

What you can do:

• Know who to call: Your gas supplier is not responsible for the pipes. The national gas emergency number is 0800 111 999. Call this number if you smell gas or are in a "no gas" situation.
• Check on neighbours: Please check on anyone nearby who is elderly, has young children, or has a health condition. Make sure they are warm and have a way to eat and drink.
• Get a carbon monoxide alarm: This is vital. Never use any outdoor heating equipment (like a camping stove, generator, or BBQ) indoors for heating or cooking. They produce deadly carbon monoxide, which is colourless and odourless. A CO alarm is the only way to know if it's present.
• Have alternatives: Keep a warm blanket for each member of your family. A small electric heater can be a useful backup if your power is still on.
