How to prepare for a pandemic

What is the risk? A pandemic is an infectious disease, like a new type of flu, that spreads quickly across the world.

A pandemic can make many people ill at the same time, putting a lot of pressure on the NHS, schools, and other essential services.

What you can do to prepare:

The best way to prepare for any pandemic is to practice good hygiene. This helps to stop the spread of all germs.

  • Wash your hands: Wash your hands with soap and water regularly, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use sanitiser: Use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
  • "Catch it, Bin it, Kill it": Always carry tissues. Catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue, bin it, and then wash your hands.
  • Stay up to date: Get your annual flu vaccination if you are eligible. This protects you and others against the most common types of flu.

What to do during a pandemic:

  • Follow official advice: The most important thing to do is follow the latest advice from the NHS and GOV.UK. This will be the most accurate source of information.
  • Follow health guidance: This may include advice on hygiene, wearing face masks, or staying at home if you are unwell.
  • Look out for others: Check on neighbours or family members who may be elderly, live alone, or have health conditions.
