How to prepare for reservoir flooding

What is the risk? Staffordshire is home to several large reservoirs. The risk of a reservoir or dam collapsing is extremely low. They are regulated by the Environment Agency and are inspected and maintained to the highest safety standards.

In the extremely unlikely event of a failure, a large amount of water could be released very quickly, causing severe flooding.

What you can do:

This risk is managed in the same way as river flooding. The best way to be prepared is to be signed up for flood alerts.

  • Check your risk: Use the free 'Check for flooding' service on the GOV.UK website. This will show you the risk from rivers and reservoirs.
  • Sign up for alerts: This is the most important step. Sign up for the free 'Flood Warning' service. You will get an automated call, email, or text if you are in an area at risk.
