What to do in a terrorism incident: Run, Hide, Tell

What is the risk? While the risk of a terrorist attack in Staffordshire is low, attacks can happen anywhere in the UK, often in crowded public places.

The official advice from UK counter-terrorism experts is "Run, Hide, Tell". Knowing what to do can help keep you safe.

RUN

  • Run to a place of safety. This is a far better option than surrendering or negotiating.
  • If there's a safe route, run. If not, hide.
  • Insist others go with you, but don't let them slow you down.
  • Leave your belongings behind.

HIDE

  • If you can't run, hide.
  • Find cover from gunfire. Be aware of your exits.
  • Try to hide from view, not just from bullets.
  • Be quiet. Silence your phone and turn off vibrate.
  • Barricade yourself in.

TELL

  • Call 999 when it is safe to do so.
  • Tell the operator:
    • Location: Where are the attackers?
    • Direction: Where did you last see them?
    • Description: What did they look like?
    • Further info: Are there weapons, casualties, or hostages?
