Make a Household Emergency Plan
What would you do if you had to leave your home quickly, or were stuck inside for several days?
An emergency plan is a simple way to make sure your whole family knows what to do, even if you are not together. It's a simple document that keeps all your most important information in one place.
Spend 30 minutes this weekend to put one together.
What to include in your plan
Key Contact Information Your plan should include a list of phone numbers for:
- Your family
- Your neighbours (especially if any are elderly or vulnerable)
- Your local council
- Your utility companies (gas, electricity, water) - the free '105' number is the one to use for any power cut
- Your insurance provider (home and car)
Important Locations:
Agree on a safe place to meet if you are separated and cannot get home.
- A "local" spot: A nearby park, library, or friend's house.
- A "distant" spot: A relative or friend's house in another town, in case the emergency affects your whole neighbourhood.
Essential Information:
Write down key information that you might forget in a stressful situation
- Doctors' details and any prescription medication you need.
- Your insurance policy numbers.
- Make, model, and registration of your cars.
A Plan for Your Pets
Your plan must include your pets.
- Do you have pet carriers ready?
- Do you have a supply of their food and any medication?
- If you had to go to a rest centre, a friend or family member might need to look after them. Do you have someone in mind?
What to do next
- Share it: Make sure everyone in your house knows about the plan and where to find it.
- Save it: Keep a paper copy somewhere safe (like your 'grab bag'). You could also save a copy on your phone or email it to a trusted family member.
